Port Campbell – Victoria Australia

Port Campbell – Victoria Australia

I’ve lived in Victoria for just over a year. I moved here after doing a few hops around Australia. I grew up in a country town called Geraldton Western Australia then lived in New South Wales for 7 years before finally deciding Victoria (Melbourne) is where I want to be. Port Campbell is a 3 or so hour drive from Melbourne. Or if you take the Great Ocean Road, like I did, make that 6 hours.

Port Campbell

I chose Port Campbell because it’s right near a landmark that I’ve been wanting to visit for years, The Twelve Apostles. They are beautiful rock formations just off the coast and look so majestic. I’m still practicing my landscape photography but you get the idea from this photo.

There’s plenty of beautiful scenery around Port Campbell including this stunning beach at Loch Ard Gorge.

I had some travel agency accomodation vouchers to use up and found a beautiful villa styled place just out of town called Anchors. It’s a little more expensive than the motels in town but for that you get amazing views, a big place with a king size bed, a kitchen, a spa bath, farm animals, a fire heater and friendly hosts. I slept really well the two nights I was here.

Vegan in Port Campbell

Small towns can prove challenging when it comes to vegan eating which is why I like to get places with kitchens. I did have a lovely vegan breakfast at Grassroots Deli Cafe. I ordered the Bruschetta with the vegan option plus some grilled mushrooms, it was delicious. They have some local produce and supplies there, however I didn’t buy any.

For lunch I decided to grab some supplies from the local grocery store and make a simple pasta. Stir through sauce, some mushrooms, garlic, spring onion and red onion was easy to throw together. I love using kitchens that don’t belong to me, they remind me that cooking is a combination of knowledge, time and tools. This was the first time cooking on an induction cooktop, that is a learning curve for sure.

It was so nice eating this whilst looking out on the local landscape. The scenery in this part of the country really is stunning. It’s a farming town so if you come here you’ll see a lot of dairy and beef farms. As vegans we are used to seeing the negative sides of animal farming, so it was nice to drive around the town and see beautiful cows grazing in big paddocks. I may not agree with how they are used and where they end up, but witnessing them go about their day was beautiful nonetheless. Maybe one day I will create a beautiful rescue farm and grow my own vegetables, that’s the dream right there.

I’m sure I’ll be back to Port Campbell sometime in the future. In terms of relaxation, serenity and sightseeing, it’s up there with the best of the and I highly recommend it for a quick 2 day getaway.
