Maple Figs on Toast

Figs remind me of childhood weekends with my Nana. She used to make the best fig jam. This recipe for maple figs on toast is super simple and super tasty. I’ve used a beautiful soft vegan cheese from Miyoko’s which is available in many Woolworth stores and other speciality stores in Australia.
Figs remind me of family
Nana used to make the most amazing fig jam when I was growing up. I still remember the cute jars she would put it in. Figs on toast wasn’t really a thing, but fig jam certainly was.
Her and my grandfather had a fig tree in their back yard. I remember picking ripe figs and opening them up, wondering each and every time whether there would be worms in them. Sometimes there would be, if the insects had gotten to them before me.
Eating figs straight off the tree in the hot Geraldton sun was definitely the best way to eat them. We used to take so many of these things for granted as kids. Now when I see how much they are in the shops, I get a bit of a fright.
Finding a good fig
Store bought figs are very hit and miss. It took me cutting through a few different figs I bought today to a few slices that looked good. The sweeter ones were a little softer and didn’t look as nice, so if I wasn’t taking a photo I would have definitely opted for those ones.
Definitely look for figs that are softer to the touch if you want to eat them straight away.
Figs on toast?
I never would have thought about sliced figs on toast, but when I was shopping at Prahran Market today I saw something similar on the cover of a cookbook and wanted to try it. I’m glad I did. They made the perfect afternoon tea.
This recipe is so simple and only requires 5 key ingredients:
- Figs
- Maple Syrup
- Vegan Cheese
- Thyme
- Bread
Vegan Cheese Alternative
If you aren’t a fan of vegan cheeses, or don’t like the price point of a good vegan cheese like the Miyoko’s cheeses, then this also works with coconut yoghurt drizzled over the top. I tried it both ways and whilst that was nice and fresh, I preferred the bite of the cheese.
I used the chive flavour in the Miyokos cheese which is the best vegan cheese I’ve had so far. Very tasty and perfect with these figs on toast.
